Following the repair of the cross in Moniaive in the spring, it was, unfortunately, damaged again a few weeks later by another large vehicle.
On both occasions, it is believed that parked cars at the junction of Chapel Street and the High Street led to drivers of long vehicles misjudging the position of the rear of their trailers whilst making the right-hand turn up Chapel Street.
There have also been occasions where Lorries have been obliged to stop in the street until the owners of parked cars have been located and moved their vehicles.
It has also been reported that loaded timber Lorries are regularly using Dunreggan instead of the back road, because of difficulties in negotiating the junction at the cross.
The Community Council believes that the cheapest and easiest way to deal with these matters, thereby reducing the risk of repeated damage to the cross, would be to extend the no parking restriction to include the short stretch of the street under the cherry tree. This would only reduce the available parking by a single vehicle, but would ensure that a larger turning area is available at the junction at all times. This should be particularly beneficial to long vehicles making the right-hand-turn from the High Street, up Chapel Street.
